Title: Kevin Volans

Work: Profile

Summary

Kevin Volans was born in South Africa in 1949. In 1973 he moved to Cologne to study with Stockhausen and Kagel and subsequently became Stockhausen's teaching assistant. He taught at the University of Natal, Durban and was Composer in Residence at Queens University, Belfast and at Princeton University, New Jersey. In Germany during the mid-70's, his work became known as part of the `New Simplicity'. Later, following several field recording trips to Africa, he embarked on a series of pieces based on African compositional techniques which quickly established him as a distinctive voice on the European music circuit. In 1986 Volans began a productive collaboration with the Kronos Quartet and their performances brought his work to a very wide audience. His output now includes five string quartets; works for orchestra, instrumental chamber ensemble, percussion; and an opera based on the last year of Arthur Rimbaud's life, The Man With Footsoles of Wind, a collaboration with Bruce Chatwin, with Roger Clarke as librettist. Volans has been commissioned by the Lincoln centre, New York, Rambert Dance Company, and BBC television among others.
